Aha! The borscht thickens... In my experience when comrade Andraž Levstik
speaks his words are worth hearing. The 'ruskie' is a man of few words, who
generally KNOWS what he's talking about! So listen-up, Lew. He may hold the
solution to your conundrum... ;-)

I'm running maradns on OpenBSD with duende logging just fine same
version as you and a more recent one.
