However, the "Lenny" release notes include this reminder:
"Typically only two stable releases are supported at any given time."
This is in the context of a note that the Debian Project generally
continues security support for one year after a branch's release, as
long as there isn't a second stable release within that year.
Basically, the normal upgrade from one stable branch to the next is so
reliable and in fact automatic, given periodic use of apt-get or aptitide,
that the Debian Project feels that you'd remain on an obsolete former
stable branch only through going out of your way to apply local policies
that are generally against your interest.
Or, to put it another way, if you've decided that Debian-stable is the
desired amount of distance from the bleeding edge, then for heaven's
sake, leave your /etc/apt/sources.list entries pegged to "stable":
Don't set them to "etch", thereby sabotaging the intended maintenance
regime and deliberately no-downtime upgrade path from one stable branch
to the next.
